You're using the same excuse that most BYBs use
no matter what the species is.
I bet every single one of the BYBs on my local Craigslist or Kijiji could say the same thing about their animals. But that doesn't excuse the fact that they don't go above and beyond to produce animals that are the prime examples of their species/type, like an ETHICAL breeder would.
Your rats make great food for snakes? That's fantastic! Good for you! It's great that you care about the health of their intended eaters. I have no problem with people who breed healthy feeder rats.
My problem with you is that you also sell these rats as pets. And not only do you sell them as pets, but you sell them to a middle man (read: pet shop) so you can't even prevent them from being used as breeders themselves.
And this comment made me laugh:
"Why is it that you feel that only registered rodents are good ones?"
Where did you get that from? I run a rescue for rats. I turn over 300-500 homeless rats every year. In my whole life, I have had maybe three rats who were registered.
I don't think that registered rats are the only good ones. But I do think that registered ones are the only ones who should be purposefully bred as pets, just like with dogs and cats. I fully support the great breeders out there who are trying to improve the species, and I do not support BYBs who are breeding the rat equivalent of mutts.
And your rat shed is outside? So what? I don't have any issue with that. Unless it's not controlled.
